A typical day

Off for an early start - and the 7:00 train from London. 50 minutes later you're at Peterborough, meeting your guide and settling into the vehicle for the short journey to Rutland.

First stop is just before the county border - a really good spot to see Red Kites and other woodland birds.

Then on along the scenic Welland Valley, heading for Eye Brook Reservoir.

At Eyebrook a welcome cup of coffee before we spend some of the morning bird-watching around this small reservoir where anything can turn up.

Stop at site where we can see a range of farmland birds.

Lunch. A quick stop at a good country pub. A bar snack or proper meal - suit yourself.

Then it's on to the Rutland Water, starting with the best viewing spot at the deep end of the reservoir, looking for wildfowl.

By mid afternoon you'll be at the world famous Rutland Water Nature Reserve. No one knows the reserve better than Martyn Aspinall and the time spent in the hides there will add many species of birds to the list seen so far.

The evening is often a very good time for bird-watching and it will be up to you to decide the how long you want to stay.

On the way back to Peterborough station, there may be time to search for a Peregrine, or at certain times of year a singing Nightingale.
